This two week course is ideally suited to people who love the outdoors and who are nature enthusiasts. You will learn practical game ranger / wilderness skills and have a wonderful African wildlife experience in one of Africa’s last remaining open wilderness areas. The course syllabus may include:
Day 1 – Arrival, introduction to camp life, wilderness introduction, astronomy
Day 2 – Survival 1: wilderness navigation, finding water, making fire, more astronomy.
Day 3 – Survival 2: edible plants, basic trapping
Day 4 – Animal ID, spoor (animal tracks) ID, animal tracking skills
Day 5 – Rifle handling and shooting skills
Day 6 – 4x4 Vehicle maintenance, equipment, off-road driving skills
Day 7 – 4x4 off-road driving skills
Day 8 – Approaching potentially dangerous animals; animal tracking & behaviour interpretation; responding to dangerous situations.
Day 9 – Conducting a guided walk; wilderness interpretation
Day 10 – Conducting a ‘game drive’
Day 11 – Sleep-out in the remote wilderness, practical exercises
Day 12 – Sleep-out in the remote wilderness, practical exercises
Day 13 – Additional practical wilderness skills; walking / exploring
Day 14 – Rest and relaxation, departure.
Days are spent outdoors in the African wilderness, learning the practical game ranger / wilderness skills, monitoring wildlife and absorbing the awesome magic of nature.
Students are instructed and supervised by an accredited and experienced FGASA and THETA trainer and facilitator. The course includes entry into National Parks and wilderness wildlife viewing boat cruises.
